Reset Joomla Administrator Password

This article will explain how to reset Joomla administrator password. See below 8 easy steps  on how to reset Joomla administrator password via the database through your cPanel (PHPMyAdmin).

It can be frustrating to lose your Joomla back end administrator password. This instruction will work for these versions of Joomla: 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 2.5 and 3.

Please note you will need your cPanel and database login details (most of the times they are the same).

Reset Joomla Administrator Password Steps:

  1. Login to your website cPanel (the one you lost the Joomla admin login): yourdomain/cpanel
  2. Inside the cPanel click on option: phpmyadmin
  3. If it doesn’t login automatically, login to your database (most cases it is the same login details as your cPanel and FTP)
  4. Inside myphpadmin, select the correct DB (generally: yourdatabse_db)
  5. Search and select the table “jos_users???. The users will show up on the right hand side. You can also search for the word ‘user’ and it will come up.
  6. Click Edit on the user you want to change the password (make sure this is an Administrator user)
  7. Type your new password. Select password Function MD5 (type your new password first and then select MD5. The order is important)
  8. Click Go

You are done on phpmyadmin.

1. Clean cache on your browser.
2. Go to the Joomla back end login page (yourdomain/administrator) and login with the correct user and the new password you just created.
Done ! You should be in.
